Apparently, photographers in the 19th C. used a trick called “The Hidden Mother” to keep infants in place for a portrait—they’d drape a parent (usually a mother, it seems) under a big piece of cloth…so the mom could keep the kid in position, and then be easily cropped out of the photo.
